While this brooch is shaped as a crescent moon, the total lunar eclipse often appears red and is called a blood or red moon. Historically, red spinels have often been mistaken for rubies, but there is no confusing these vibrant gems for ordinary rubies. Eleven oval spinels are set in a graduated curve of 15ct gold. Each gem sits in an open-backed, fancy cut-back collet. The horns are very pointed and highly polished. This brooch fastens with the c-clasp common during this era.
